Americorps Service Position Title: Outreach Assistant

Immediate supervisor: Emily Woodle, Outreach Coordinator

Location: University of Tennessee, Knoxville – Agriculture Campus

The Cumberland Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) project partners with Cumberland Plateau communities (Cumberland, Morgan and Scott counties) to find a balance between economic growth and conservation of natural resources. Developing a HCP is a collaborative process with partners including city and county governments, state agencies, developers, utility districts, and watershed associations. Our project staff are from The Nature Conservancy, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville.

The main goal for this position is to assist the outreach coordinator and community members of the outreach committee to implement outreach strategies and activities. This position will be based in Knoxville, TN. There will be some travel to the Cumberland Plateau based on project need.

Essential functions

· Work with the Outreach Team, help develop and implement outreach strategies.

· Conduct research (gathering & assimilating information) as needed for outreach tools.

· Assist with the following activities:

o develop and implement educational programs for multiple audiences;

o develop education and outreach tools such as brochures, articles, and videos;

o communication activities such as newsletter development, updating web site, meeting preparation and minutes;

o develop and implement targeted educational/participatory programs for high schools such as service learning.

· Network with a variety of agencies and groups such as Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Obed Watershed Community Association, Cumberland County Home Builders Association, and local government offices.


Desired Skills/Expertise

· Minimum of 4-year college degree.

· Strong research and writing skills.

· Organizational skills.

· Ability to be a self-starter and learn quickly complex subjects.

· Ability to communicate in situations where diverse and sometime conflicting ideas are shared.

· Willingness to speak in public.

· Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft office software.

· Basic knowledge of aquatic (especially) and terrestrial ecology.

· Appreciation for variety of ways people relate to the natural environment.

· Appreciation for collaborative processes.
